The Guided Projects Program

Student Energy Guided Projects (SEGP) is a clean energy project development program for post-secondary students. The program provides youth with the tools, coaching and funding they need to solve the energy problems experienced in their communities using proven processes and technologies or by developing new ones. The program is organized into streams which focus on a specific process or technology. Cohorts of youth-led teams are invited to participate in these streams and each work on a project that solves an energy problem in their community using their stream’s process or technology. Cohort 3 of Guided Projects (SEGP) enables youth-led teams to address energy challenges in their community that can be solved with solar PV. This 18-month program pairs practical curriculum units, tools and templates with each stage of the solar project development process. Teams will receive coaching throughout the program, expert mentorship, and up to 15,000 Canadian Dollars in funding to turn their plans into reality. Through the Guided Projects, your team will deliver a real solar energy project that creates lasting impact for a community. This call is only open to Canadian projects. Teams outside of Canada will not be considered at this point.

📚Program Benefits

  • Lead a real solar PV installation from concept to completion in your community, gaining end-to-end project development and management experience
  • Access a structured curriculum on our learning hub covering energy systems, project planning, feasibility assessment, procurement, and stakeholder engagement
  • Receive regular mentorship from experienced professionals in the energy industry
  • Receive project funding of up to CAD $15,000 to execute your team's solar PV installation upon approval of your project plan
  • Build your professional portfolio with a tangible, measurable clean energy project

🌍 Program Focus Areas

Guided Projects Cohort 3 is focused on solar photovoltaic (PV) installations. Teams will identify a host site in their community — such as a school, community centre, place of worship, farm, or non-profit facility — and lead the development and implementation of a solar PV system at that site.

Projects should aim to:
  • Deliver measurable clean energy generation capacity
  • Address a genuine energy need in the host community
  • Serve as a model for future youth-led clean energy initiatives
While the program provides training across all project phases, teams with a viable project concept and an identified or potential host site will be given particular consideration.

About SEGP  Before You Apply  /  How to Apply   /   Begin Application

Requirements and Eligibility

SEGP requires applicants to apply as a team of 3-5 members given the capacity that is required to complete the project. Individual applications are not accepted.

A team should meet the following requirements:
✅Have one (1) Team Lead and two to four (2-4) additional Team Members. Outside of this categorization, team roles and responsibilities are established at the discretion of the team itself.
✅Have all team members living in Canada
✅Have an identified or prospective project host site — a community location where the solar PV system could be installed (e.g., school, community centre, farm, non-profit facility etc)
✅Demonstrate complementary skills across the team — a mix of technical, project management, financial, and communication capabilities is strongly preferred

Individually, each participant should also meet the following requirements:
✅Be 18–30 years old as of March 2026
✅Be fluent in English, as the program will be delivered in English
✅Be able to commit approximately 5–8 hours per week for the duration of the program (May 2026 – August 2027)
✅Have reliable access to a computer and an internet connection to participate in virtual sessions
✅Demonstrate a genuine interest in clean energy, sustainability, or community development
✅Have a strong interest or background in climate, energy, international cooperation, or related fields

Acceptance to the Program

Applications to the SE Guided Projects Program received, evaluated, and accepted on a per team basis, subject to each team member meeting the program eligibility criteria. The team application is to be submitted by the team lead and prepared with input and contributions from all team members.

Please apply with the team members you plan to work with. You are welcome to work with individuals outside of the program, but please note that only those that apply and are accepted into the program will have access to the curriculum and receive a certification upon graduation. In case you haven't formed your team yet, we suggest submitting your application closer to the deadline to have time to form your team. One good starting point to recruit team members is through the Student Energy Chapter in your school or other sustainability-focused clubs.

Successful candidates will receive an acceptance email from guidedprojects@studentenergy.org. This email will detail the next steps to officially register for the program.

Expected Time Commitment

Participants are expected to be able to dedicate 5-8 hours per week to the completion of their project and program deliverables for the duration of their program cohort from May 2026 until August 2027, or until they complete all program deliverables, whichever is sooner. This time commitment encompasses all program activities including, but not limited to, drafting project documentation and deliverables, communicating and meeting with stakeholders, meeting with your team and coach, attending cohort calls and webinars, and completing the curriculum lessons

Project Requirements and Graduation Criteria

Completion of the SEGP program is determined on an individual participant basis. To be eligible for graduation, every SEGP participant must commit to the following:
  • Attending and participating in the bi-weekly 45-minute virtual coaching meeting until project completion (except as agreed upon by the coach and team)
  • Completing all curriculum components (including learning modules and any assignments or assessments) in the SEGP solar curriculum within the required timeframes and deadlines
  • Contributing to their team’s development and submission of deliverables (including, but not limited to, project documentation and reporting) accepted by program staff within the required timeframes and deadlines
  • Attend and engage with other teams during virtual meetings (“cohort calls”), workshops and webinars as organized by the program team)

Tips for a Successful Application

  1. Bring in your lived experience. What have you learned from your personal journey that gives you a unique perspective? Remember that experiences exist in all shapes and forms, and include much more than your professional background.
  2. Be authentic. Avoid using AI-generated responses — this is your chance to show your voice. We are looking for teams and individuals with diverse and nuanced perspectives.
  3. Show your passion. We want to see your genuine interest to grow and contribute to this field, and want this program to catalyze this journey for you.
  4. Take your time. Being thoughtful and authentic is the best strategy.

Notice on the use of AI
